I Want My Son Back, Dead or Alive”: Tanzanian Ex-Diplomat Humphrey Polepole Abducted
Dar es Salaam, Tanzania – In a shocking incident, former Tanzanian ambassador to Cuba, Humphrey Polepole, was abducted from his Dar es Salaam home on Monday night. According to his brother, Godfrey Polepole, the assailants broke into the house, overpowered the occupants, and took Humphrey away.

The police have confirmed that they are investigating the incident. “The Police Force has seen the reports being circulated on social media and from his relatives claiming that he has been kidnapped,” said police spokesperson David Misime. “We have already begun working to ascertain the truth.”
The abduction occurred just weeks before Tanzania’s general election, scheduled for October 29, 2025. Polepole had been a vocal critic of the government, accusing it of corruption, internal rule violations, and intimidation of dissenters. He had also questioned the legitimacy of President Samia’s nomination as the CCM’s presidential candidate.
A Mother’s Desperate Plea
Polepole’s mother, Annamary Polepole, has made an emotional appeal for her son’s safe return. “I want my son back, dead or alive,” she said in an interview with the BBC. “If he is alive, return him to me. If he is not, bring his body and let me bury my child myself.”
The incident has sparked widespread concern and condemnation, with many calling for the government to ensure Polepole’s safe release. The case has also raised concerns about the state of human rights in Tanzania, with opposition groups alleging a pattern of politically motivated abductions ahead of the election.
The police have sought Polepole’s brother, Augustino, to provide clarification on allegations he reportedly made on social media claiming a police officer was involved in the abduction. As the investigation continues, Polepole’s family and supporters are holding onto hope that he will be returned safely.
