Malawi’s President Lazarus Chakwera has conceded defeat in the country’s presidential election, paving the way for former leader Peter Mutharika to return to power.
In a televised address on Wednesday, hours before final results were due, Chakwera said he had already called Mutharika to offer congratulations.
“This outcome is a reflection of your collective will to have a change of government, and so it is only right that I concede defeat out of respect for your will as citizens and out of respect for the constitution,” Chakwera told Malawians.
Mutharika’s Comeback

Partial results released earlier in the week suggested that Mutharika secured around 60 percent of the vote in the September 16 poll.
The 85-year-old former president, who ruled from 2014 to 2020, campaigned on a message of experienced leadership and a promise to restore stability.
While he was credited during his first term with lowering inflation and improving infrastructure, critics accused him of cronyism and corruption.
Five Challenging Years
Chakwera, a former evangelical preacher, took office in 2020 after defeating Mutharika in a rerun of the annulled 2019 election. His victory was initially met with celebrations.
However, his presidency has been marked by economic stagnation, soaring inflation, and worsening food insecurity following a devastating cyclone and drought.

Election History
This election marked the country’s first national vote since the 2019 disputed polls, when Mutharika was declared winner. The courts later annulled that election after uncovering widespread irregularities including altered tally sheets leading to the rerun that brought Chakwera to power.
Now, five years later, Malawians appear to have turned back to Mutharika, hoping his leadership will bring economic relief.
