Malcolm-Jamal Warner, ‘The Cosby Show’ star, dies at 54 in Costa Rica drowning
Malcolm-Jamal Warner, the actor who played teenage son Theo Huxtable on the hit NBC sitcom “The Cosby Show,” has died at the age of 54 in an accidental drowning in Costa Rica.
According to authorities, Warner drowned on Sunday afternoon while swimming in the Caribbean at Playa Cocles in Limon province. He was pulled out to sea by a rip current and rescued by people on the beach, but first responders from Costa Rica’s Red Cross found him without vital signs.
Warner played the role of Theo Huxtable for eight seasons on “The Cosby Show,” which aired from 1984 to 1992. He won an Emmy nomination for supporting actor in a comedy in 1986 and became a household name.

After “The Cosby Show,” Warner appeared in several other TV shows, including “Malcolm & Eddie” and “The Resident.” He also had roles in films like “Fool’s Gold” and was a Grammy winner for best traditional R&B performance.
Warner’s death has been met with an outpouring of tributes from fans and fellow actors. “My heart is so so sad,” wrote Tracee Ellis Ross, who starred alongside Warner in the BET sitcom “Read Between The Lines.” “What an actor and friend you were: warm, gentle, present, kind, thoughtful, deep, funny, elegant.”
Basketball star Magic Johnson also paid tribute to Warner, saying, “Every time I ran into Malcolm, we would have deep and fun conversations about basketball, life, and business. He will truly be missed.”
