Mali Arrests Two Generals and Frenchman in Alleged Coup Plot

Mali’s military government says it has apprehended two senior Malian generals, a French national, and other individuals accused of plotting to destabilize the nation. The announcement came Thursday evening from Security Minister Gen. Daoud Aly Mohammedine during a televised address. He reassured citizens that the situation was “completely under control” and that a full investigation was underway.

Rumors Confirmed

For several days, speculation had swirled about arrests within the Malian army. The government’s confirmation quashed uncertainty but sparked concerns about the political climate. This latest move comes amid a broader crackdown on dissent following a rare pro-democracy rally in May — the first significant protest since the military seized power nearly four years ago.

Alleged French Intelligence Link

According to Mohammedine, the arrested French national, identified as Yann Vezilier, acted “on behalf of the French intelligence service.” Authorities claim he coordinated with political leaders, civil society members, and Malian military personnel to undermine state institutions. Mali has yet to provide evidence supporting these claims, and there has been no immediate response from the French government.

Official Statement from the Transitional Government

In his statement, the security minister described the group as “marginal elements” within the armed forces and civilian circles. He declared that the conspiracy was foiled through swift arrests and revealed that the plot began on August 1. National television later aired photos of 11 people alleged to be part of the scheme, including the two generals.

Profiles of the Arrested Generals

One of the accused, Gen. Abass Dembélé, formerly served as governor of Mali’s Mopti region. He was removed from his post in May after demanding an inquiry into allegations that the Malian army killed civilians in Diafarabé. The other, Gen. Néma Sagara, was once celebrated for her leadership during the 2012 fight against militant insurgents. Both now face accusations of attempting to destabilize the government.

Mali continues to grapple with an insurgency fueled by armed groups linked to al-Qaida and the Islamic State.
