Deadly Stampede in Border Region
At least 80 buffaloes drowned in the Chobe River after being chased by lions and plunging from a cliff, Namibia’s Environment, Forestry and Tourism Ministry has confirmed.
The incident occurred on the Namibian side of the river, which forms part of the border with Botswana, home to the renowned Chobe National Park.
Chased by Predators

According to officials, the herd was fleeing lions when they trampled over each other and tumbled into the river.
Mbeha Tadeus, from the Kabulabula Conservancy, told the BBC:
“Whenever they are chased by lions, they try to cross over into Namibia and start trampling over each other.”
Not the First Tragedy
Similar mass drownings have occurred before. In 2018, nearly 400 buffaloes died in the same river under similar circumstances, making it one of the worst such incidents on record.
Meat Shared With Communities
Ndeshipanda Hamunyela, ministry spokesperson, confirmed that the meat from the carcasses would be distributed to nearby communities.
Footage shared by Namibian public broadcaster NBC showed residents gathering at the riverbanks and dividing buffalo meat among themselves.
