Nigeria’s ruling party endorses President Tinubu for a second term despite economic challenges.
Nigeria’s ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) has officially endorsed President Bola Tinubu for a second and final term in office, setting the stage for the 2027 presidential race. The endorsement was announced at a party summit in Abuja on Thursday, coinciding with the second anniversary of Tinubu’s presidency.
Now 73, Tinubu won the February 2023 election under contentious circumstances. His victory was challenged by his two main opponents, who alleged electoral fraud. However, Nigeria’s courts dismissed those claims, and Tinubu has consistently insisted that his win was legitimate.
The APC’s leadership says it wants Tinubu to stay the course on key economic reforms launched under his administration. These include scrapping the long-standing fuel subsidy and liberalising the country’s exchange rate—moves that have drawn praise from international financial institutions like the IMF and global credit rating agencies.
However, the reforms have also triggered economic turbulence. Inflation has surged, and millions of Nigerians face a worsening cost-of-living crisis. Public dissatisfaction over economic hardship and security concerns remains high.
Still, Tinubu continues to wield considerable political clout. In 2024, he met with French President Emmanuel Macron to discuss strengthening international ties, underscoring his efforts to project global influence.
Meanwhile, Nigeria’s opposition parties remain fragmented and weakened by internal disputes and high-profile defections, making the APC’s early backing of Tinubu a strong signal of its confidence heading into 2027.
