Russia and Morocco Strengthen Ties Amid Middle East Tensions

Strengthening Diplomatic Relations

Sergey Lavrov, Russia’s Foreign Minister, and Nasser Bourita, Morocco’s Foreign Minister, held a high-level meeting to reaffirm their countries’ commitment to deepen diplomatic and economic ties. Both leaders emphasized the importance of bilateral cooperation and their shared vision on key regional and international issues.

Focus on Gaza Ceasefire

The talks also centered on the ongoing war in Gaza. Both ministers expressed satisfaction with the implementation of the first phase of the ceasefire deal between Israel and Hamas. Lavrov praised Morocco’s role “in promoting efforts to achieve a peaceful settlement of the Palestinian issue,” highlighting the country’s diplomatic influence in the region.

Morocco’s Role in Peace Efforts

Lavrov acknowledged the contribution of Mohammed VI of Morocco as head of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation’s Jerusalem Committee. Bourita echoed these sentiments, emphasizing that Morocco and Russia share a common understanding of developments in the Middle East and the need to promote lasting peace.

A Call for Political Resolution

“We appreciate efforts made to establish a ceasefire,” Bourita said. “We hope all parties abide by the elements of the agreement and that it opens a political horizon leading to a just and lasting solution to the Palestinian issue.”

Western Sahara Dispute Addressed

The two leaders also discussed the long-standing dispute over Western Sahara. In a press conference on Monday, Lavrov stated that “any solution acceptable to all parties would be satisfactory” for Russia, indicating that Morocco’s autonomy plan could be a viable option.

The meeting underscores the growing cooperation between Russia and Morocco, with both nations aligning on multiple international issues while navigating sensitive geopolitical matters in the Middle East and North Africa.
