A catastrophic landslide in Sudan’s Darfur region has left hundreds dead and thousands displaced, with aid workers struggling to reach the remote mountain village.

Hundreds Feared Dead as Landslide Devastates Sudan Darfur Mountains

A devastating landslide has struck Sudan’s western Darfur region, killing at least 370 people in the remote Marra Mountains, according to the United Nations. The Sudan Liberation Movement/Army (SLM/A), which controls the affected area, has claimed the death toll could be as high as 1,000.

Heavy Rains Trigger Catastrophe

Days of torrential rainfall triggered the landslide on Sunday, flattening much of the village of Tarseen. Reports indicate only one survivor has been found, raising fears that hundreds remain buried under the mud.

SLM/A leader Abdel Wahid Mohamed al-Nur defended his group’s estimate, saying displaced people had sought refuge in the mountains due to Sudan’s ongoing civil war.

“People on the ground have confirmed [the death toll]. We estimate above 1,000 people are dead or at least under the mud,” al-Nur said.

UN Faces Access Challenges

Antoine Gérard, the UN’s Deputy Humanitarian Coordinator for Sudan, confirmed at least 370 deaths but admitted that reaching the site has been difficult.
“We do not have helicopters, everything goes in vehicles on very bumpy roads. It takes time and it is the rainy season,” he explained, noting that delays could take days.

The UN has dispatched tents, food, water, and emergency kits, but logistical hurdles threaten to slow aid delivery.

Civil War Worsens Humanitarian Crisis

Sudan
A catastrophic landslide in Sudan’s Darfur region has left hundreds dead and thousands displaced, with aid workers struggling to reach the remote mountain village.

The disaster comes as Sudan grapples with a brutal civil war between the army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF). Since April 2023, the conflict has killed an estimated 150,000 people and displaced more than 12 million, with Darfur one of the hardest-hit regions.

Darfur’s governor, Minni Minnawi, described the landslide as a “humanitarian tragedy” and urged international organisations to step in. The African Union also called on warring factions to silence their weapons and allow humanitarian access.

Survivors in Need of Aid

The psychological toll on survivors is severe. Al-Nur stressed the urgent need for food, medical supplies, and psychological support for affected families.

“The tragedy is greater than what our people can bear alone,” Minnawi said.

Photos from the scene show deep mountain gullies converging at the site of the destroyed village, underscoring the destructive power of the landslide.
