Ali Muhammad Ali Abd-Al-Rahman, widely known as Ali Kushayb, led the Janjaweed militia — a government-backed force that unleashed terror in Darfur, resulting in the deaths of hundreds of thousands. His conviction marks a significant milestone in the International Criminal Court’s (ICC) pursuit of justice for victims of the conflict.

First ICC Trial for Darfur Atrocities

Ali Kushayb’s conviction marks a turning point in the Darfur justice process.

Kushayb’s case is historic, as he is the first individual to be tried and found guilty by the ICC for crimes related to Darfur. He maintained his innocence throughout the proceedings, claiming mistaken identity, but the court found overwhelming evidence linking him directly to widespread atrocities.

Testimonies of Suffering and Survival

During the trial, survivors shared horrific accounts of violence between 2003 and 2004. Witnesses described their villages being burned, men and boys executed, and women subjected to sexual slavery. The court found that Kushayb and his men orchestrated these brutal attacks as part of a broader campaign of ethnic cleansing.

The ICC’s Landmark Verdict

Judges in The Hague confirmed that the Janjaweed’s tactics — including mass executions, torture, and sexual violence  were systematically implemented under Kushayb’s leadership. His conviction represents not only a victory for justice but also a message that crimes of such magnitude will not go unpunished.

Voices from Darfur

Outside the courtroom, survivors from Darfur gathered to witness history. One attendee said, “He was the one who gave the orders. He was the one who got the weapons.” Their words echoed the collective trauma of millions affected by the war and symbolized a long-awaited sense of accountability.

Justice Still Elusive for Many

Despite this conviction, many perpetrators of the Darfur crisis remain unpunished. UN reports and ICC investigations reveal that violence, including sexual assaults and mass killings, continues in parts of the region. Kushayb’s sentencing, however, is seen as a crucial step toward ending impunity and restoring hope to survivors.
