Chinese Technology Showcases Innovation at Aviation Africa Summit 2025 in Kigali

The ninth edition of the Aviation Africa Summit and Exhibition took place in Kigali, Rwanda, from Thursday to Friday, drawing more than 1,700 aviation professionals and over 100 companies. This year’s theme, “Collaborating to Unlock Africa’s Growth – How Can Africa Deliver a Sustainable Aviation Industry?”, underscored the growing urgency of finding solutions to Africa’s air transport challenges while highlighting new opportunities created by technology.

High-Level Calls for Affordable Air Travel

Rwandan President Paul Kagame officially opened the summit, stressing the need for greater collaboration across the aviation sector. He noted that the high cost of air travel continues to hinder tourism, trade, and connectivity across the continent. Kagame urged African governments and industry leaders to take bold steps to reduce barriers, make aviation more affordable, and unlock the continent’s economic potential through increased connectivity.

Chinese Innovation at the Center Stage

One of the highlights of the summit was the EH216-S, a pilotless passenger-carrying aerial vehicle developed by EHang, a leading Chinese urban air mobility company. The electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) aircraft made its first-ever flight in Africa during the summit, drawing widespread attention from aviation experts and policymakers alike.

Witnessed by Leaders and Industry Experts

The maiden flight was witnessed by President Kagame, senior Rwandan officials, and Chinese representatives. The demonstration marked a symbolic step in the growing China-Africa cooperation in aviation and low-altitude economic development. It also showcased how advanced technologies could provide new solutions for Africa’s aviation sector, especially in countries where infrastructure remains limited.

First-Hand Experience of Innovation

Melissa Rusanganwa, head of International Cooperation at the Rwanda Civil Aviation Authority (RCAA), was among the first to experience the groundbreaking aerial vehicle. Sharing her excitement, she said, “I’m feeling great. It’s really exciting to see this here in Rwanda. We hope to have this technology in Africa to make transportation easier and more advanced.”

Technical Capabilities of the EH216-S

The EH216-S is designed to carry two passengers with a maximum payload of 220 kilograms. Featuring 16 propellers, the autonomous vehicle can vertically take off and land, reach cruising speeds of up to 130 kilometers per hour, and operate at altitudes below 1,000 meters. Its maximum straight-line range is 30 kilometers, making it an ideal solution for short-distance urban travel and air mobility services.

What sets the EH216-S apart from similar projects is its regulatory achievements. It is the world’s first eVTOL aircraft to receive a type certificate, production license, and standard airworthiness certificate. These certifications strengthen its credibility as a safe and commercially viable air mobility solution, paving the way for its adoption in diverse regions, including Africa.

Unlocking Africa’s Low-Altitude Economy

The summit placed particular emphasis on Africa’s low-altitude economy, which refers to economic activities linked to airspace below 1,000 meters, such as drones, eVTOLs, and aerial logistics. Despite Africa accounting for about 17 percent of the world’s population, the continent handles less than five percent of global air transport volume. Experts argue that bridging this gap presents enormous opportunities for growth, innovation, and job creation.

With Africa’s aviation industry facing persistent challenges—ranging from high operational costs to underdeveloped infrastructure—technological breakthroughs like the EH216-S offer a glimpse into the continent’s future. Adoption of such innovations could support faster tourism expansion, medical evacuation services, cargo transport, and urban mobility solutions, helping Africa overcome long-standing connectivity barriers.

The Kigali summit reaffirmed the role of international cooperation, particularly between China and Africa, in reshaping the aviation landscape. While challenges remain in terms of affordability, regulation, and infrastructure, the success of the event demonstrated that Africa is ready to embrace advanced technologies that can support sustainable growth. As President Kagame emphasized, unlocking the skies for Africans will not only connect people but also drive inclusive economic development.
