UN Warns of Ceasefire Breach in DRC-Rwanda Peace Deal

International Community Urged to Act as Tensions Escalate in Eastern Congo

The United Nations has raised concerns over the deteriorating security situation between the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) and Rwanda, declaring that the agreed ceasefire “is not being respected.” This comes amid growing fears of renewed large scale violence in eastern DRC, a region already burdened by years of conflict and humanitarian crises.

UN Special Envoy Raises the Alarm

According to Huang Xia, the UN Special Envoy for the Great Lakes region, international efforts to bring peace to the troubled area have so far fallen short. He noted that although the ceasefire deal was a significant diplomatic achievement, the failure to honor its commitments is undermining stability. “The agreed ceasefire is not being respected,” Huang stated, emphasizing that peace requires more than just signatures it requires concrete actions.

Call for Renewed Regional Dialogue

Huang urged regional powers to resume “direct and frank dialogue” to avoid a further escalation. He called on neighboring countries and international partners to take decisive steps to halt the fighting. “It is crucial that the region works together to end this war once and for all,” he said, underlining that the situation cannot be allowed to spiral further out of control.

DRC’s Position on Peace Conditions

Zenon Ngay Mukongo, the DRC’s representative to the United Nations, reiterated his government’s firm stance on the conditions required for a lasting peace. He declared that the cessation of hostilities, the withdrawal of Rwandan troops, the end of support for M23 rebels, and the restoration of Congolese state authority over all occupied areas are “non-negotiable conditions.”

Withdrawal of Troops and End of Rebel Support

Mukongo stressed that Rwanda’s military withdrawal and an end to its alleged backing of the M23 are essential steps toward restoring trust and stability. He made clear that DRC will not accept any settlement that compromises its sovereignty or territorial integrity. His statement echoes the sentiments of many Congolese citizens who have endured the impact of prolonged conflict.

A Region Deeply Scarred by Conflict

The eastern part of DRC has been a flashpoint for violence for decades. Ongoing clashes have resulted in the deaths of thousands and forced millions of people from their homes, creating one of the world’s most severe humanitarian crises. The resurgence of fighting has further strained already fragile peace efforts.

Global Community Faces Pressure to Act

DRC
The UN warns that the DRC-Rwanda ceasefire is collapsing as tensions in eastern Congo intensify.

The international community, including the United Nations and regional organizations, is now under growing pressure to intervene more effectively. Observers warn that failure to enforce the peace deal could plunge the region back into full-scale war, jeopardizing not only DRC and Rwanda but also the wider Great Lakes region.

Hope for a Lasting Resolution

Despite the challenges, diplomats and peace advocates remain hopeful that renewed dialogue can salvage the peace process. The UN has pledged to continue working with both nations to ensure that commitments made on paper are translated into tangible steps on the ground. For many, ending this conflict is not just a diplomatic necessity but a humanitarian imperative.
