UN Warns Sudan’s Cholera Outbreak Is Spiraling Out of Control

Rising Fatalities as Conflict and Rainfall Fuel the Health Crisis
World Health Organization (WHO) has raised urgent alarm over the worsening cholera outbreak in Sudan, where conflict and poor living conditions are fuelling a deadly public health emergency.
The country’s Federal Ministry of Health (Sudan) this week reported 120,496 cases and 3,368 deaths nationwide since the outbreak began in mid-2024.
Fatality Rate Nearly Triple Emergency Threshold
On Wednesday, WHO warned that the current case fatality rate of 2.8% is almost three times the internationally recognized emergency threshold.
“This indicates that the cholera outbreak is spiraling beyond control,” the agency said, calling for an urgent scale-up of response and humanitarian assistance to prevent further loss of life.
Conflict and Heavy Rains Worsening the Crisis
Cholera is commonly transmitted through contaminated food or water and can kill within hours if untreated. In Sudan, escalating fighting and heavy seasonal rains have made controlling the disease much harder.
Millions of people are unable to access clean water, sanitation, and medical care. Displacement camps and overcrowded shelters have become hotbeds for the spread of infectious diseases, including cholera and dengue fever.
War Deepens Humanitarian Emergency
The outbreak is unfolding against the backdrop of the ongoing war between Sudanese Armed Forces and Rapid Support Forces.
The conflict, now in its third year, has created what the UN describes as “the world’s worst humanitarian crisis.” Famine has already gripped many parts of the country, and health services are on the brink of collapse.

Despite the army recapturing the capital Khartoum and several key territories, the fighting continues to block aid deliveries and disrupt disease control measures.
Urgent Call for International Support
Health officials and aid agencies warn that without rapid intervention, the death toll will continue to rise. WHO has called for increased international support to provide clean water, sanitation facilities, vaccines, and emergency health care to millions at risk.
The organization also urged all warring parties to allow unhindered humanitarian access to affected communities.
