Court awaits disclosures as prosecution cites investigator’s ill health

The Dansoman Circuit Court has postponed the case involving popular Ghanaian actor Samuel Seth Karikari, also known as Koo Ofori, who is facing allegations of $50,000 fraud. The new date for the hearing has been set for August 13, 2025.

The adjournment was requested by the prosecution team, led by Chief Inspector Christopher Wonder, who informed the court that the case disclosures could not be filed due to the investigator’s indisposition.

The presiding judge, El-Alawa Abdul-Baasit, granted the request and rescheduled the hearing for a Case Management Conference.

The Charges and Plea

Karikari, known for his role in the long-running Efiewura Television series, pleaded not guilty to a charge of defrauding by false pretences. He is currently on GH¢320,000 bail with three sureties, all of whom must be justified.

Background of the Case

Ghanaian actor Samuel Seth Karikari, known as Koo Ofori, appears in court over an alleged $50,000 land fraud case.
Actor Koo Ofori’s fraud case involving a disputed land transaction has been adjourned to August 13 as prosecution awaits filing disclosures.

According to the prosecution, the complainant, Dr. Emy Oduro-Burton, is a US-based medical practitioner. In 2021, Karikari reportedly informed her during a conversation that he had found a full plot of land measuring 70×100 feet at Spintex, Accra, available for $50,000 (GH¢309,000). He offered to purchase it on her behalf for a project.

Dr. Oduro-Burton subsequently transferred the full amount into Karikari’s bank account.

Discrepancy in Land Size and Payment

Investigations revealed that the accused later paid only GH¢170,000 to Kwaku Danso, the rightful owner of the land and a witness in the case. Upon returning to Ghana to inspect the land, the complainant discovered that it was only half a plot, priced at GH¢170,000—not the full plot represented to her by the accused.

After repeated attempts to recover the balance of her money failed, Dr. Oduro-Burton filed a report with the police.

Admission and Next Steps

Karikari was arrested and during interrogation, reportedly admitted to the offence in his investigation caution statement. The court is expected to move forward with case management at the next hearing in August.
