Netflix new South African rom com brings charm, mischief and plenty of chemistry to the screen, with a star-studded cast and a story of love, class and identity.
Netflix is serving up a taste of South African romance this festive season with Love & Wine, a vibrant new romantic comedy set against the scenic backdrop of the Cape Winelands. The film promises all the ingredients of a feel-good holiday hit charm, laughter, and the kind of easy chemistry that pairs perfectly with a summer evening.
Leading the cast is Ntobeko Sishi, known for his breakout role as Ntokozo in Gomora, and Thandolwethu Zondi from Netflix’s Go! Live Your Way. They’re joined by Masali Baduza, Thando Thabethe, and Bongile Mantsai, forming an ensemble that mixes fresh faces with some of South Africa’s most seasoned talent.
Love & Wine is inspired by the Brazilian Netflix hit Ricos de Amor but takes on a distinctly local twist. The story centers on Ovee (Sishi), the wealthy heir to a family-owned wine empire, who is determined to prove that he’s more than just a product of privilege. In a bid to earn his father’s respect and perhaps rediscover himself Ovee decides to work incognito at the family winery.

To pull off his plan, he enlists the help of his best friend and driver Nathi (Zondi). The two hatch a daring identity swap, with Ovee pretending to be a humble worker and Nathi stepping into the heir’s lavish shoes. What begins as a harmless social experiment quickly turns into a journey of tangled lies, unexpected love, and hard-earned lessons.
Ovee’s world takes a turn when he meets Amahle (Baduza), a driven medical student who believes he’s from modest beginnings. As their relationship blossoms, Ovee struggles to keep his secret while realizing that authenticity not wealth might be the key to true happiness.
Meanwhile, Nathi finds himself fully immersed in Ovee’s life of luxury, where he crosses paths with Lena (Thabethe), the winery’s sharp-tongued but irresistible manager. Their relationship adds a hilarious and heartfelt subplot to the film’s mix of mistaken identities and romantic misadventures.

The film unfolds as a blend of love, laughter, and self-discovery a reminder that sometimes to find yourself, you have to step outside your comfort zone. The humor is light and the tone playful, but at its core, Love & Wine explores deeper themes of belonging, integrity, and personal growth.
Thando Thabethe, who plays Lena, shared her excitement about the project on Instagram, writing, “Listen, when I say the BEST and most hilarious time on this set, I’m not exaggerating!!! Can’t wait for you to meet Lena. #LoveAndWine coming to @netflixsa 5 Dec.” Her post quickly gained traction among fans, fueling anticipation for the release.
The cast also includes familiar favorites like Desmond Dube, Thembsie Matu, and Rorisang Mohapi, adding a layer of warmth and humor that South African audiences know and love. Each character, whether part of the central romance or the film’s supporting ensemble, contributes to the film’s blend of heartfelt comedy and vibrant local storytelling.
Visually, Love & Wine leans into the natural beauty of the Cape Winelands, using its sunlit vineyards and rustic charm to create a setting that feels as lush and romantic as the story itself. The film’s aesthetic golden hues, sprawling fields, and cozy winery interiors sets the perfect stage for a story about love that crosses social divides.
For Netflix, the release underscores its ongoing investment in South African storytelling, expanding a growing lineup of locally produced dramas, comedies and romantic features that have captured international audiences. Love & Wine aims to deliver a universal love story with a proudly South African flavor one that’s both familiar and fresh, full of humor and heart.
Whether you’re watching for the laughs, the love, or simply the stunning scenery, Love & Wine looks set to be one of this year’s festive highlights. Like a good vintage, it promises warmth, a little sparkle and a lasting impression the kind of film best enjoyed with someone special and a glass of your favorite wine.
