Facing the Music: Offset Opens Up About His Addiction

Rapper Offset has revealed the emotional journey behind his decision to give up codeine, a highly addictive drug often glamorised in hip hop culture. Speaking on the “Baby, This Is Keke Palmer” podcast, the former Migos member shared how his 15-year-old son, Jordan, became the wake-up call that changed his life.

Offset explained that his dependence on codeine began during Migos’ meteoric rise to fame, when success turned his passion for music into a stressful job. “I was taking to the cup,” he said. “A lot of artists think they can’t make music without drugs. That’s cap.”

From Experimentation to Addiction

Offset admitted that his relationship with codeine began innocently  what he called “playing with it”  but quickly spiralled into an addiction. The drug, commonly mixed with soda and candy to create a drink known as “lean” or “purple drank”, became a regular part of his lifestyle.

The rapper described how his loved ones started noticing changes in him, even when he didn’t want to acknowledge the problem. “When your mama calling you like, ‘You need to get off that stuff,’ and she said it two or three times, it hurt for sure,” Offset recalled.

A Wake-Up Call from His Son

The turning point came when Offset noticed his young son imitating his behaviour without understanding its consequences. Seeing Jordan mimic his cup of “lean” made Offset realise the deep influence he had on his children.

“That’s what touched me,” he said. “I’m like, ‘Oh no, I gotta get off of this.’ Even if he didn’t know what was in the drink, he was paying attention.”

This realisation marked the beginning of his path to sobriety. Offset has now been four years sober, crediting his son and his family’s constant concern for saving his life.

The Role of Family and Fatherhood

Family support played a crucial role in Offset’s recovery. Despite his fame and success, he admitted that his mother’s repeated pleas and his children’s awareness made him face the truth. “You can have all the money and success, but when your family looks at you and says they’re worried, that hits different,” he shared.

Offset says being a father has taught him accountability, patience, and discipline  traits that have helped him stay clean. His decision to prioritize his health and family has also deepened his appreciation for the role of parenthood in shaping his identity beyond music.

The Culture of Codeine in Hip Hop

Offset’s story sheds light on a bigger issue in the hip hop industry  the glamorization of drug use. Codeine, often romanticized as a creative enhancer or escape, has been referenced by several major artists.

Lil Wayne, Future, and the late Juice WRLD have all mentioned “lean” in their lyrics. Songs like “Me and My Drank” and “Codeine Crazy” made the substance seem like a symbol of artistic depth and emotional release. However, Offset’s honesty reveals the darker side  addiction, health risks, and emotional turmoil hidden behind the fame.

Choosing Sobriety and Self-Awareness

Today, Offset views his sobriety as one of his greatest achievements. He continues to use his platform to advocate for healthier choices and open conversations about addiction. His story is not just about overcoming a habit but breaking the cycle of pain that addiction often perpetuates within families.

By speaking openly about his struggles, Offset hopes to challenge the stigma surrounding addiction and inspire other artists and fans to seek help. “Being sober made me sharper, better as a man, better as a father,” he said. “You don’t need that cup to be creative. You just need to be yourself.”
