Call to Defend Human Connection in a Digital Era

The Pope highlighted what he called a “new era” in communication, stressing the importance of preserving people’s capacity to listen, speak, and engage with one another authentically—values he said were under threat in the age of artificial intelligence.

“We must work together to shape a new way of thinking and speaking, one rooted in love,” he said, urging influencers to use their platforms to reach out to those who are suffering and spiritually searching.

“Be agents of communion,” he added, “breaking through the walls of division, selfishness, and polarization.”

Church Seen as Moral Guide in Age of AI

This latest speech adds to a growing series of public interventions by Pope Leo XIV since his election in May, many of which have focused on technology’s growing influence and the Church’s role in promoting ethical standards.

In his first Sunday address as pontiff, the Pope warned that the rise of AI and other scientific breakthroughs reinforces the Church’s responsibility to stand for justice and human dignity.

A Historic Papacy from America

Pope Leo XIV, born in Chicago in 1955, is the first American to lead the Catholic Church. Of Spanish and Franco-Italian descent, he studied mathematics at Villanova University in 1977 before being ordained in 1982.

Though he spent much of his early priesthood in Peru, he maintained close ties to his home city, returning regularly to serve local communities. The Pope, who holds dual Peruvian nationality, is widely praised for his grassroots ministry among the poor and marginalised.

His commitment to inclusivity and social justice has shaped his leadership approach, especially as he addresses emerging global challenges such as AI.
