Pro-Ukraine Hackers Claim Responsibility for Cyber-Attack on Aeroflot
Massive IT Disruption Halts Flights
Russia’s national airline, Aeroflot, was forced to cancel more than 40 flights after a cyber-attack claimed by pro-Ukrainian hackers severely disrupted its information systems. The hacking group, Silent Crow, working with Belarusian collective Cyber Partisans, said the breach “completely destroyed” Aeroflot’s IT infrastructure.
Flight Cancellations and Delays
Most of the canceled flights were domestic, although some routes to Belarus and Armenia were also affected. The disruption caused widespread delays, leaving numerous passengers stranded. Russia’s transport ministry has confirmed that affected travelers will be transferred to flights operated by other carriers.
Threats and Claims by Hackers

Silent Crow, in a Telegram post, threatened to publish personal data of all Russians who have ever flown with Aeroflot. The post ended with the slogans “Glory to Ukraine! Long live Belarus!” Cyber Partisans, on its website, echoed the message, saying the action was part of their support for Ukraine against Russia.
Government Response and Investigation
Russia’s prosecutor’s office acknowledged a system failure due to a hacker attack and has launched a criminal investigation. Russian MP Anton Gorelkin warned that the country is under siege “on all fronts, including the digital one.”
Doubts About the Claims
Despite the statements by the hacker groups, the BBC noted that such groups often exaggerate the impact of their actions. It remains unclear whether the attack will cause lasting damage to Aeroflot’s systems.
Context of Cyber Warfare
Since Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022, cyber-attacks have become increasingly common between pro-Russian and pro-Ukrainian factions. While some hacker groups claim to be independent activists, others may have links to national security agencies. The Cyber Partisans, for example, describe themselves as a collective fighting to free Belarus from dictatorship and have been active in targeting Russian and Belarusian infrastructure since 2022.

Impact on Russian Aviation
This cyber-attack is one of the few with a visible, immediate impact, disrupting a major airline and affecting tens of thousands of civilians. Earlier this month, drone strikes attributed to Ukraine also led to hundreds of flight cancellations in Moscow, showing how digital and aerial threats are now routine for Russian airspace.
