Madagascar’s New Military Ruler – Colonel Michael Randrianirina’s meteoric rise from obscurity to power in just three days

A Rapid Rise to Power
Until just a few days ago, most citizens of Madagascar knew little about Michael Randrianirina. But within 72 hours, the once obscure colonel became the most powerful man in the country. As the head of Madagascar’s elite CAPSAT army unit, Randrianirina joined thousands of protesters in the capital, calling for the resignation of then-President Andry Rajoelina. When Rajoelina fled and lawmakers voted to impeach him, Randrianirina announced CAPSAT’s takeover in front of the presidential palace.
A Sudden Seizure of Power
The turning point came swiftly. After the president fled, the constitutional court declared Randrianirina the country’s new ruler. While the ousted leader insists he is still in charge, the military’s position appears firm. Overnight, Randrianirina went from commanding troops to commanding a nation.A Man Cloaked in Mystery
Despite leading the country’s most powerful military unit, very little is known publicly about Randrianirina. Born in Sevohipoty, a village in the southern Androy region, he once served as the area’s governor from 2016 to 2018 under former President Hery Rajaonarimampianina. His journey has been shaped by both political ambition and military command.
Climbing the Military Ranks
After his time as governor, Randrianirina became head of an infantry battalion in Toliara, a role he held until 2022. Known as a vocal critic of Rajoelina, he emerged as a prominent figure in military circles. His opposition to the president placed him under growing scrutiny as tensions mounted in the country.
Imprisoned Without Trial
In November 2023, Randrianirina was jailed without trial in a maximum-security prison, accused of plotting a coup and inciting a mutiny. His imprisonment sparked outrage among students, soldiers, and politicians who claimed it was politically motivated. He was released in February the following year a development that would set the stage for his rapid political ascent.
A “Servant” of the People

Hours before officially taking power, Randrianirina said that he considered himself a “servant of the people.” Those who have met him describe him as charismatic, confident, yet humble. Malagasy journalist Rivonala Razafison characterizes him as “simple but tough,” “straightforward,” and “patriotic.”
Rejecting Colonial Influence
Randrianirina has also signaled a strong nationalist streak. When offered the chance to respond in French, one of Madagascar’s official languages, he insisted on speaking Malagasy, rejecting what he called the glorification of the colonial tongue. His stance reflects a broader desire to reclaim national identity from lingering colonial influences.
Social Welfare at the Forefront
The new leader has promised that his military-led transitional government will focus on social welfare. In a nation where roughly 75% of people live below the poverty line, he has pledged to address economic hardship and inequality. According to his statements, the military intends to govern for up to two years alongside a civilian administration before holding democratic elections.

Swearing-In and a New Era
Sources indicate that Randrianirina is expected to be sworn in within days, formalizing his leadership after a whirlwind takeover. His swift rise from prisoner to president has stunned both domestic and international observers. Whether his leadership will stabilize or further divide the country remains to be seen.
