Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang signs with Marseille again after leaving Saudi Arabia.
Aubameyang Returns to Marseille After Brief Saudi Spell
Veteran striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang has returned to Marseille, signing on a free transfer just a year after departing the club for a short-lived stint in Saudi Arabia. The 36-year-old forward had joined Al-Qadsiah in 2024 but left the club earlier this month following a mutual agreement to terminate his contract.
Contract runs until 2027
Aubameyang has reportedly committed to a two-year deal, with the Ligue 1 side securing his services until 2027. The Gabonese international now begins his second spell at Marseille, eager to add more goals to his name and bring experience to a squad that narrowly missed out on European qualification last season.
Productive season in Saudi Arabia
Despite his brief time in the Saudi Pro League, Aubameyang delivered an impressive return of 21 goals and 3 assists in 36 appearances across all competitions. His efforts helped Al-Qadsiah to a fourth-place finish in the league and a run to the King’s Cup final, where they narrowly lost out.

A strong record at Marseille
This will mark Aubameyang’s second chapter with the French giants. During his initial spell in the 2023–24 season, he made a significant impact with 30 goals and 11 assists in 51 appearances. His attacking contributions proved crucial for Marseille’s domestic and European campaigns, making his return a major boost for the club’s frontline.
Career journey since Arsenal exit
Since leaving Arsenal in early 2022, Aubameyang’s career has taken several turns. The former Gunners captain was once a key figure in the Premier League, where he notched 68 goals in 128 appearances. However, after falling out with Mikel Arteta and losing the captain’s armband, he left the London side by mutual agreement.
A brief stay in Spain and England
He then signed a short-term deal with Barcelona, where he impressed in limited time, before returning to England to join Chelsea for the 2022–23 season. However, his time at Stamford Bridge proved underwhelming, with limited playing time and inconsistent performances keeping him out of the spotlight.
Fifth move since Arsenal
His return to Marseille now marks his fifth club switch in just over three years, following spells at Barcelona, Chelsea, Marseille, Al-Qadsiah, and now back to Marseille.
What this means for Marseille
The French side is hoping that Aubameyang’s experience and goal-scoring instinct will inject energy into their attack. At 36, he remains one of the most clinical finishers in Ligue 1 when fit. With a new contract in place, he is expected to play a leading role both on the pitch and in mentoring younger players.
Marseille will be aiming to improve on their previous campaign and challenge for domestic honours, and Aubameyang’s return could be a step in the right direction.
