Ghana’s 2025/26 Football Season to Kick Off on July 1
GFA unveils full calendar ahead of FIFA World Cup, with expanded youth and women’s competitions
The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has officially approved the 2025/26 Omnibus Competitions Calendar, confirming that the new football season will begin on July 1, 2025, and end on June 30, 2026.
The calendar was endorsed during a meeting of the Executive Council on June 9, following a detailed presentation by the GFA General Secretary. The timeline aligns with both the GFA Statutes and the Association’s financial year.
In preparing the schedule, the GFA also factored in the 23rd FIFA World Cup, set to run from June 11 to July 19, 2026, ensuring that all major domestic competitions wrap up ahead of the global tournament.
Key Highlights of the New Season
-
Ghana Premier League: Matches will continue on Sundays, with midweek dates reserved for any postponed fixtures—just like the previous season.
-
Division One League & Malta Guinness Women’s Premier League: These competitions will also maintain Sunday matchdays.
-
MTN FA Cup: Most games, including all Women’s FA Cup fixtures, will be played on weekends, except for selected early-round matches which may be held midweek.
-
GFA eTrophy (eFootball): The digital competition returns, offering players a chance to qualify for the national eFootball team.
-
Beach Soccer & Futsal Leagues: Both will remain part of the season’s official programme.
-
Regional Leagues: The Division Two, Division Three, Regional Women’s Division One, and Colts (U13, U15, U17) leagues will commence on or before October 1, 2025, and end by May 31, 2026.
Major Boost for Girls’ Youth Football

One of the biggest developments is the nationwide expansion of the Girls Colts Football competitions (U15 & U17). This follows a successful pilot run in the Northern and Greater Accra Regions, and is part of the GFA Women’s Football Strategy in partnership with FIFA Women’s Football Development.
Off-Season Competitions
The GFA has made room for off-season tournaments, including:
-
Elite U15 Girls Championship
-
Elite U19 Second Division Championship
-
Boys U15 Elite Competition
-
KGL Foundation U17 Colts Championship
The early release of competition dates, including registration windows and the 31st GFA Annual Congress, reflects the Association’s dedication to structured planning and stakeholder readiness.
“We are committed to delivering a vibrant and well-coordinated football season across all levels,” the GFA said in a statement.
