Reds edge Southampton 2-1 to book League Cup fourth-round place
Alexander Isak netted his first goal for Liverpool and Hugo Ekitike scored a dramatic late winner before being sent off, as Liverpool beat Championship side Southampton 2-1 in the League Cup third round on Tuesday.
Isak, Liverpool’s £125m record signing from Newcastle, struck in the 43rd minute just seconds after Adam Armstrong had gone close for the visitors. Federico Chiesa set up the goal, pulling back for Isak to finish calmly.
Southampton equalised in the 76th minute through Shea Charles, after a costly mistake from Wataru Endo, but Ekitike, who replaced Isak at half-time, sealed victory five minutes from time.
His joy turned to frustration when he was shown a second yellow card for removing his shirt in celebration.
Liverpool captain Andy Robertson, who led a heavily rotated side, called it a lesson for the young striker:
“It’s two silly bookings … but he’s only young and he’ll learn from it.”
Isak Settling In

For Isak, it was a welcome breakthrough after a protracted transfer saga:
“It’s still early, a new club and new teammates, but I feel good … with all the games I get I’m only going to get better.”
