Protesters mark the October 7 Gaza anniversary, calling for stronger action against normalization and foreign influence.

Dozens of protesters gathered outside the U.S. Embassy in Tunis on Tuesday to mark the anniversary of the October 7 Hamas led attack on Israel. The demonstration, organized by several pro-Palestinian advocacy groups, aimed to demand justice for Gaza and pressure Tunisian authorities to take a stronger stance against normalization with Israel.

Participants waved Palestinian flags, chanted slogans condemning U.S. support for Israel, and displayed signs with messages such as “Stop the genocidal war in Gaza” and “Criminalize normalization if you are sincere.” The gathering reflected Tunisia’s ongoing public sympathy toward the Palestinian cause and growing frustration with international inaction.

A Nation’s Outcry Against Normalization
Amid a heavy police presence, protesters voiced anger toward Tunisia’s political leadership and foreign partners. They called for the expulsion of the American ambassador and the passage of legislation to outlaw normalization with Israel.

Ahmed Al-Kahlawi, president of the National Authority to Support the Resistance and Oppose Normalization, addressed the crowd, praising the resilience of Palestinians. “This is a tribute to the Palestinian people themselves who did not surrender, who resisted, sacrificed martyrs, and did not stop resisting. These people are the face of this Arab renaissance,” he declared to loud applause.

Voices of Resistance and Determination
Protesters emphasized that their movement would not end until Tunisia enacts firm policies reflecting its historical support for Palestine. Activist Assala Azouzi, representing the Joint Action Association for Palestine, spoke passionately about the group’s mission. “Our voice is for Gaza, our voice is for Palestine. We will continue to besiege the American embassy and all embassies complicit in the Palestinian tragedy,” she said.

Her remarks captured the mood of defiance among demonstrators, who see Tunisia’s current position as insufficiently bold in standing up to global powers seen as complicit in the ongoing violence in Gaza.

Organizers of the protest announced plans to continue the sit-in until lawmakers pass a bill criminalizing normalization with Israel. They also demanded that Tunisian authorities ensure unimpeded humanitarian aid access to Gaza.

The calls echo a broader regional sentiment, as many Arab countries face internal debates over whether to maintain or sever ties with Israel amid continuing hostilities in Gaza. For Tunisia, a nation that prides itself on democratic values and regional leadership, the pressure from civil society to adopt a firmer anti-normalization policy continues to grow.

A Renewed Push for Justice in the Arab World
This week’s protest serves as both a commemoration and a call to action. It highlights how the plight of Palestinians remains deeply rooted in the consciousness of the Tunisian public. As the world reflects on a year since the devastating events in Gaza, Tunisia’s streets once again echo with chants for freedom, justice, and resistance against occupation.

The message from Tunis is clear solidarity with Palestine remains unwavering, and the demand for accountability from world powers will not fade until peace and dignity are restored to the Palestinian people.
