Threat of Further Violence Looms After Mexican Cartel Rampage

Fresh fears of renewed bloodshed hang over Guadalajara after a violent rampage by the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG).

The chaos erupted following the killing of cartel leader Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes, also known as “El Mencho.” In retaliation, cartel members set vehicles ablaze, blocked highways, and attacked property across Jalisco state, leaving scenes of charred debris and deserted streets.

President Claudia Sheinbaum has insisted that calm is returning and that security forces are restoring order. However, residents remain uneasy, with schools closed and businesses shuttered amid fears of further clashes.

Experts warn that Mexico’s long-running “kingpin strategy” — targeting top cartel leaders — has historically triggered power struggles and increased violence. The unrest also casts a shadow over Guadalajara’s preparations to host international matches during the upcoming FIFA World Cup.

While officials say there is no threat to visitors, many locals argue that deeper issues of insecurity and disappearances must be addressed before celebrations can truly begin.
