Ghana has called on the Commonwealth of Nations to strongly condemn an attack targeting Ghanaian peacekeepers serving in Lebanon.
The appeal comes after reports that troops from Ghana participating in a United Nations peacekeeping mission were attacked while carrying out their duties in the Middle Eastern country. Ghanaian officials described the incident as deeply concerning and urged the international community to take a firm stance against violence directed at peacekeeping forces.
Ghana has long been a key contributor to global peacekeeping operations, deploying soldiers to conflict zones around the world under the mandate of the United Nations. The country’s troops are widely recognised for their role in maintaining stability and protecting civilians in volatile regions.
Authorities in Accra say attacks on peacekeepers threaten not only the safety of the soldiers but also the effectiveness of international efforts to maintain peace in conflict-affected areas.
The Ghanaian government is now urging the Commonwealth a political association of 56 member states to speak out strongly against the attack and support measures that ensure the safety of peacekeeping personnel.
Officials say such condemnation would send a clear message that the international community will not tolerate acts of violence against forces working to maintain global peace and security.
Peacekeeping missions in Lebanon operate in a complex and often tense security environment, where armed groups and regional tensions can create risks for international forces stationed in the country.
Despite these challenges, Ghana has reaffirmed its commitment to supporting global peace efforts and continuing its participation in international missions aimed at preventing conflict and protecting vulnerable communities.
Diplomatic sources say Ghana will continue to engage international partners to ensure accountability for the attack and to strengthen protections for peacekeeping forces operating in conflict zones.
