Drone strikes have hit the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo city of Bukavu, which is currently held by the M23 Rebel Group, killing several people and escalating tensions in the conflict-hit region.

Local authorities and residents reported explosions in parts of the city following the strikes, which targeted positions linked to the rebel group. The number of casualties has not been fully confirmed but officials say several people were killed and others injured.

Bukavu lies in the volatile eastern region of Democratic Republic of the Congo, where fighting between government forces and armed groups has intensified in recent months. The M23 rebels have captured key towns and strategic areas, raising fears of a wider regional conflict.

The rebel group, formally known as the March 23 Movement, resurfaced in 2021 after years of relative inactivity and has since expanded its control across parts of eastern Congo. The government in Kinshasa has accused neighbouring Rwanda of supporting the rebels, a claim Kigali denies.

The latest drone strikes appear to be part of ongoing military efforts to weaken the group’s positions and regain control of territories currently under rebel rule.

Residents say the attacks have heightened fears among civilians already living under difficult conditions. Many families have been displaced by the conflict, while humanitarian agencies warn that continued fighting could worsen the crisis in eastern Congo.

International organisations have repeatedly called for a ceasefire and renewed diplomatic efforts to resolve the conflict peacefully. The fighting has raised concerns across the region due to the risk of further escalation involving neighbouring countries.

For now, authorities continue to assess the damage from the drone strikes as tensions remain high in Bukavu and surrounding areas.
