Charlize Theron Reveals Traumatic Night Her Mother Shot Her Father in Self-Defence
South African-born actress Charlize Theron has opened up about one of the most traumatic experiences of her life, revealing details of the night her mother fatally shot her father in self-defence.
In a candid interview with The New York Times, the Oscar-winning star recalled the events of 1991, when she was just 15 years old and living in South Africa.
Theron described how her father, who had been drinking, became aggressive after an earlier incident at a family gathering. According to her, tensions escalated quickly once they returned home, leading to a violent confrontation.
Sensing danger, Theron retreated to her bedroom, where she and her mother, Gerda Theron, tried to stay safe. She said she could tell from the way her father arrived home that the situation was about to turn serious.
The situation escalated when her father forced his way into the house by firing shots through the doors. Theron said it was clear he intended to harm them.
Her mother retrieved a firearm and joined her in the bedroom, where they attempted to hold the door shut as shots were fired from outside.
In the chaos, no bullets struck them. Moments later, as the threat intensified, Gerda Theron acted in self-defence, shooting her husband. She also fired a shot that injured his brother during the incident.
The actress has previously spoken about the night but rarely in such detail. She emphasised the fear and unpredictability of the situation, describing it as something difficult to fully explain.
Theron’s mother was not charged, with authorities ruling the shooting as an act of self-defence.
The revelation has reignited conversations around domestic violence and survival, with many praising Theron for sharing her story and shedding light on such experiences.
