US President Donald Trump has sparked controversy after saying he “loves the inflation” as new figures showed American prices rising at their fastest rate in three years.

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, US inflation rose to 4.2% in May compared to a year earlier, up from 3.8% in April. The increase was largely driven by higher energy costs linked to the ongoing US-Israel conflict with Iran.

Speaking at the White House, Trump described the inflation figures as “great” before adding: “You know what I really love? I love the inflation.”

The president later claimed his comments were taken out of context, insisting he meant inflation was lower than expected despite the conflict in the Middle East.

Trump also promised prices would “come down like a rock” once the war with Iran ends. Hours later, the US military launched fresh strikes on Iran as tensions between the two countries escalated further.

The latest inflation figures mark the third consecutive month of rising prices in the United States, with Americans increasingly feeling pressure from higher fuel and energy costs.

Oil prices have surged following instability in the Middle East and growing concerns over the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most important oil shipping routes.

According to motoring group AAA, the average price of petrol in the US has climbed to $4.15 per gallon, compared to $2.98 earlier this year before the conflict intensified.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics also reported rising costs for air travel, healthcare, communication and recreation.

Although inflation remains below the 9.1% peak recorded under former President Joe Biden in 2022, economists warn that continued price increases could create political and economic challenges for Trump ahead of upcoming elections.

Higher inflation may also force the US Federal Reserve to consider raising interest rates again in an attempt to slow spending and stabilise prices.

Economists say even if the Iran conflict ends soon, disruptions to global oil supply chains could continue affecting prices until at least 2027.

Trump’s remarks quickly drew criticism from political opponents, with Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer accusing the president of showing disregard for struggling Americans facing rising living costs.
