Cabinet Office minister Peter Kyle says he held a “thoughtful and frank conversation” with UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer as pressure continues to mount over the Prime Minister’s future, with growing speculation that he is actively considering his next steps amid increasing political turbulence inside the Labour Party.

Kyle said Starmer is currently reflecting on the “political realities” facing both the government and the country, and stressed that any decisions being taken are being guided by what is in the “best interests of the country.” His remarks come at a time when internal tensions within Labour are becoming increasingly visible, with reports of concern among senior figures about the direction of leadership.

The comments follow a period of heightened speculation in Westminster about Starmer’s position, with some political insiders suggesting that discussions about a possible resignation timeline are now taking place behind closed doors. However, Downing Street has pushed back against these claims, insisting that the Prime Minister is focused on governing and “getting on with the job.”

Despite this, pressure continues to build from within Labour ranks. Several MPs are reported to be calling for clarity on leadership direction, arguing that uncertainty is affecting party unity and public confidence. The situation has been further complicated by recent electoral challenges and ongoing internal divisions over strategy and messaging.

Attention has also turned to potential successors, with Greater Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham increasingly seen as a leading alternative within parts of the party. Supporters argue that Burnham represents a more electorally effective figure capable of strengthening Labour’s position against Reform UK and its leader Nigel Farage.

However, not all voices within the opposition agree with that assessment. Shadow Chancellor Mel Stride criticised Burnham’s political record, describing him as inconsistent and arguing that the country instead requires stability rather than further uncertainty in leadership debates.

As speculation continues, the focus remains on whether Starmer will move to formally clarify his position or attempt to reassert authority within the party. For now, both allies and critics agree that the coming days could prove pivotal in shaping the future of the Labour leadership and the wider political landscape.
