Dozens injured as deadly blaze tears through popular entertainment venue in Thailand’s capital
At least 27 people have been killed after a massive fire ripped through a popular bar in Bangkok, Thailand, in the early hours of Monday, authorities have confirmed.
Firefighters were called to the scene shortly after midnight and found patrons desperately trying to escape through the venue’s main entrance as flames engulfed the building.
More than 60 people have been taken to hospital for treatment, while several others remain missing.
Chaos as fire spreads rapidly
Videos shared on social media showed terrifying scenes as flames burst from the front of the bar, with people running for safety, screaming and falling in the chaos.
Some victims appeared to have caught fire while attempting to escape.
Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul visited the scene and confirmed that 27 bodies had been recovered.
The cause of the blaze remains under investigation.
Victims trapped inside building
According to local reports, the victims include nine men and 18 women.
The prime minister said a musician performing at the venue when the fire broke out described how events unfolded rapidly.
According to the witness, a fire started near an electrical cut-out switch before explosions followed, causing panic among those inside the bar.
Many people reportedly fled towards the back of the building in an attempt to avoid the smoke and flames.
However, authorities said numerous victims became trapped in toilets and other enclosed areas, where many of the bodies were later discovered.
Fire brought under control after 30 minutes
Firefighters managed to contain the blaze after around 30 minutes, but by then the damage had already been done.
Images from the scene showed dozens of body bags lined up outside the venue, while the interior of the building was left completely destroyed.
Furniture, walls and ceilings were blackened by smoke and fire damage, with parts of the roof collapsing.
Popular venue devastated
The bar, identified locally as Rong Beer Na Lat Phrao, is located in Bangkok’s Chatuchak district and is considered a popular entertainment spot.
A passing driver reportedly spotted the flames shortly before midnight and immediately stopped to help.
He told local media that he broke windows and managed to rescue two people from the burning building before emergency services arrived.
Investigation continues
Authorities are continuing to search for missing people and determine the exact cause of the fire.
The tragedy has shocked Thailand and prompted an outpouring of grief as families wait for news of loved ones.
Officials are expected to examine whether safety measures and emergency exits at the venue met required standards.
