World Cup Semi-Finals Set for Blockbuster Showdowns as France, Spain, England and Argentina Battle for Glory
European giants clash while old rivals England and Argentina renew one of football’s greatest rivalries
The 2026 FIFA World Cup has delivered drama, surprises and unforgettable moments, and now only four teams remain in the race to lift football’s biggest prize.
France, Spain, England and Argentina are just two victories away from becoming world champions, with the semi-finals promising blockbuster encounters featuring some of the game’s biggest stars.
France and Spain prepare for heavyweight battle
The first semi-final will see two European powerhouses go head-to-head as France face Spain in a match many believe could become an instant World Cup classic.
France booked their place in the last four after defeating Morocco 2-0, with Kylian Mbappé once again stealing the headlines. The French superstar has scored eight goals at the tournament and is now just one strike behind Lionel Messi in the race to become the World Cup’s all-time leading scorer.
Didier Deschamps’ side also boasts tremendous depth, with Ousmane Dembélé scoring five goals and Michael Olise leading the competition with five assists.
Spain, however, arrive with plenty of confidence. The 2010 world champions are unbeaten in 36 matches and have won 27 of those games.
Despite reaching the semi-finals, many believe Spain have not yet shown their very best football. Young sensation Lamine Yamal has scored only once at the tournament, while Mikel Oyarzabal has gone scoreless in his last two matches.
Spain will be hoping their stars save their finest performances for the biggest stage.
England and Argentina renew fierce rivalry
The second semi-final will see England take on defending champions Argentina in one of the most anticipated fixtures of the tournament.
The rivalry between the two nations is one of football’s most famous, dating back decades and including Diego Maradona’s iconic performances against England in 1986.
This time, Lionel Messi will face England for the first time in his legendary career, doing so on perhaps the biggest stage possible.
Messi currently shares the Golden Boot lead with Mbappé on eight goals, while England’s Harry Kane and Jude Bellingham have also enjoyed outstanding tournaments.
Bellingham has scored twice in each of England’s last two knockout matches and continues to be one of the standout performers at the World Cup.
England manager Thomas Tuchel has guided the Three Lions to another semi-final appearance, extending the nation’s impressive record in major tournaments.
Two matches, one dream
With a place in the World Cup final at stake, the margin for error is almost non-existent.
France and Spain will battle for European supremacy, while England and Argentina prepare to write another chapter in one of football’s greatest rivalries.
Only two teams will advance, but all four remain within touching distance of football immortality.
