World Cup 2026: England face Argentina showdown as Three Lions prepare for semi-final battle
England are set for a highly anticipated World Cup 2026 semi-final clash against defending champions Argentina in Atlanta on Wednesday, with a place in Sunday’s final against Spain at stake.
The match, scheduled for 20:00 BST, will mark the first competitive meeting between the two nations since the 2002 World Cup and will see Argentina captain Lionel Messi face England for the first time in his international career.
England head coach Thomas Tuchel admitted he feels nervous ahead of the biggest match of his tenure but insists he does not feel the pressure of leading the Three Lions into only their fourth World Cup semi-final.
Defender Marc Guehi believes the pressure is on Argentina as the reigning champions look to continue their title defence.
“We know the quality they have, but we also know what we are capable of,” the England defender said as the team prepares for a historic encounter.
England remain hopeful that midfielder Declan Rice will recover in time to feature after illness disrupted his preparation for the quarter-final victory. A final decision on his availability is expected before kick-off.
Argentina enter the semi-final as one of the tournament favourites, with Messi leading a squad aiming to reach another World Cup final. The holders defeated their previous opponents to secure their place in the last four, while England advanced after a dramatic knockout run.
The winner of the clash will meet Spain in Sunday’s final, after Spain booked their place in the championship match.
England’s preparations have also received support from 1966 World Cup winner Sir Geoff Hurst, who described the Argentina match as the toughest challenge the team has faced so far.
Fans around the world are expected to watch the historic encounter, with coverage available on BBC One and BBC iPlayer, while BBC Radio 5 Live and BBC Sounds will provide live commentary and build-up.
