The breakthrough came in a tightly contested encounter, with Gordon finding the net after a hard-fought opening period. The goal sparked huge celebrations among England fans as Thomas Tuchel’s side continued their bid for World Cup glory.

The match has also been marked by rising tensions, with former England goalkeeper Paul Robinson claiming the referee was being “bullied” by Argentina’s players. Argentina defenders Lisandro Martínez and Cristian Romero have both been shown yellow cards.

England are aiming to book a place in Sunday’s final against Spain, who defeated France 2-0 in the other semi-final.
