Coventry Half Marathon Route Error Leaves Runners Completing Longer Distance
Organisers of the Coventry Half Marathon have issued an apology after discovering that Sunday’s race course was incorrectly measured, resulting in runners covering a longer distance than the official half marathon length.
Run For All, the UK-based organisation behind the event, confirmed that the route exceeded the standard 13.1 miles (21km) due to a misplaced turning point.
According to the organisers, an internal review found that a key turning point on the course was positioned 256 metres off its correct location. This error caused the overall route to extend by approximately 512 metres.
In a statement, Run For All said it “takes full responsibility for the error” and expressed disappointment over the incident, adding that it apologises unreservedly to all participants affected.
Although the mistake impacted race distance, organisers stated that all results have now been adjusted to reflect equivalent finishing times for a standard half marathon distance.
Participants have also been offered 50% off entry fees for next year’s event as compensation.
Run For All confirmed that a full internal investigation will be carried out to prevent similar issues in future races.
The Coventry Half Marathon, which starts in the city centre and extends into the north-west suburbs before looping back, took place alongside a 10K race on the same day.
The organisation was founded by the late athlete Jane Tomlinson CBE and supports charitable fundraising across the UK.
