Her daughter, Nonhle Thema, confirmed the news on Monday, April 20, sharing a heartfelt message announcing her mother’s death and asking for prayers during this difficult time.
A family statement revealed that Shange passed away in the early hours of Monday at a hospital in KwaZulu-Natal after battling illness. The family described her as a legendary figure in South African arts and culture who left a lasting legacy both on screen and in pageantry.
Before her acting career, Shange made history in 1972 when she became the first Black woman to represent South Africa at the Miss World pageant. She also became the first Black woman to win a local beauty title before full integration of the competition.
