Historic Temperatures Break Records Across Several Regions
Tunisia is facing an intense heatwave, with temperatures rising close to 50 degrees Celsius and breaking historical records in several parts of the country.
The scorching conditions peaked on Friday, according to the country’s meteorological department, as residents struggled to cope with the extreme heat.
The central governorate of Kairouan recorded a temperature of 49.7°C, surpassing its previous record of 49.2°C. In the northeastern governorate of Zaghouan, temperatures reached 48.6°C, exceeding the previous high of 48°C.
The heatwave has affected daily life across the country, with many people seeking relief by drinking more water, swimming, and spending time in cooler green spaces.
Traditional workers, including blacksmiths and bread bakers, have faced additional challenges as the already extreme temperatures are intensified by the heat from their ovens and equipment.
Health officials have urged residents to take precautions, especially vulnerable groups, as prolonged exposure to extreme heat can increase the risk of heat-related illnesses.
The latest heatwave highlights growing concerns over rising temperatures across North Africa, where increasingly severe weather conditions continue to impact communities and livelihoods.
