England Secure Third Place With Record-Breaking Win

England ended their 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign in spectacular fashion, defeating France 6-4 in an unforgettable third-place play-off on Saturday. Bukayo Saka stole the show with a sensational hat-trick as the Three Lions recorded their highest World Cup finish since lifting the trophy in 1966.

The “bronze final” produced 10 goals, making it the highest-scoring third-place match in World Cup history and one of the most entertaining games of the tournament.

England made the perfect start, with captain Declan Rice opening the scoring in the third minute after capitalising on a French mistake. Ezri Konsa doubled the advantage moments later, heading home from Rice’s corner.

Saka then took centre stage. The Arsenal winger scored twice before halftime to give England a stunning 4-0 lead, leaving France shell-shocked at the break.

France mounted a spirited comeback after halftime. Kylian Mbappe scored twice, with Bradley Barcola adding another, reducing the deficit to 4-3 and threatening an incredible turnaround.

However, Saka completed his hat-trick from the penalty spot in the 87th minute after Djed Spence was fouled inside the box, restoring England’s two-goal cushion.

Ousmane Dembele struck deep into stoppage time to make it 5-4, but Jude Bellingham sealed the victory moments later with a brilliant solo goal after weaving through the French defence.

Saka became only the second England player to score a hat-trick in a World Cup knockout match after Sir Geoff Hurst’s famous treble in the 1966 final. He was deservedly named Player of the Match following a dominant display.

The result also marked England’s best-ever World Cup finish outside their home country and their first World Cup victory over a higher-ranked nation since defeating Argentina in 2002.

For France, it was a disappointing end to Didier Deschamps’ tenure as national team coach. Despite an impressive second-half fightback led by Mbappe, Les Bleus conceded six goals in a World Cup match for the first time in their history.

England finish the tournament on a high with an attacking masterclass that will be remembered as one of the greatest World Cup third-place matches ever played.
