Tom Holland’s latest Spider-Man film surpasses Avengers: Endgame opening
Spider-Man: Brand New Day has made box office history after updated figures showed it recorded the biggest domestic opening weekend ever in the United States and Canada.
The latest instalment in Marvel’s Spider-Man franchise earned $360 million during its opening weekend, according to Sony Pictures. The figure was higher than the initial Sunday estimate of $355 million.
The result puts the film ahead of Avengers: Endgame, which previously held the record after opening with $357 million in 2019. The figures are not adjusted for inflation.
Strong global performance
The updated domestic results have also pushed Brand New Day’s worldwide opening to approximately $932 million.
Despite its record in North America, the film remains behind Avengers: Endgame globally. The 2019 Marvel blockbuster earned an enormous $1.2 billion during its opening weekend, making it the highest-grossing global debut on record.
The performance of Brand New Day nevertheless represents a major achievement for Sony and Marvel, particularly given the intense competition surrounding its release.
Tom Holland returns
British actor Tom Holland once again plays Peter Parker, continuing his role as Spider-Man in the Marvel franchise.
Directed by Destin Daniel Cretton, the film follows Parker as he lives in isolation after erasing his identity from the world. He is also struggling with changes to his powers while attempting to rebuild connections with people from his past.
Holland is joined by Zendaya, who returns as MJ, Peter’s former girlfriend, and Jacob Batalon, who reprises his role as Peter’s best friend, Ned.
Star-studded cast
The film also features several major Hollywood names, including Mark Ruffalo, Florence Pugh and Sadie Sink.
The story sees Spider-Man facing a new threat to New York City while attempting to reconnect with MJ and Ned.
The film is also expected to play an important role in Marvel’s wider cinematic universe, coming ahead of the planned release of Avengers: Doomsday in December.
Competition with The Odyssey
The success of Brand New Day is particularly notable because it opened alongside Christopher Nolan’s latest blockbuster, The Odyssey.
Nolan’s film had secured many IMAX screens, creating additional competition for the Spider-Man release. However, Brand New Day is scheduled to begin its IMAX run this coming weekend, potentially giving its box office performance another boost.
Industry reacts to record
Entertainment publication Variety described the film’s opening as “mind-boggling”, highlighting the scale of its achievement.
Brand New Day and Avengers: Endgame are currently the only two films to have earned more than $300 million during a single domestic opening weekend.
The new record further demonstrates the continuing strength of the Spider-Man character and the popularity of Tom Holland’s portrayal of Peter Parker.
With its IMAX release still ahead and strong international earnings already recorded, Spider-Man: Brand New Day could continue to build on its extraordinary start at the global box office.
