Uganda has ordered bars, Malwa joints and other alcohol selling establishments to remain closed until 3 p.m. on working days as part of a government crackdown on early morning drinking.
The directive was issued on Tuesday, August 11, by Minister of Local Government Balaam Barugahara, who instructed local authorities to enforce restrictions on alcohol outlets in their jurisdictions.
The government says the measure is aimed at addressing social problems linked to excessive alcohol consumption, including idleness, family difficulties and rising crime in some communities.
Under the directive, alcohol-selling establishments must not open before 3 p.m. on working days, subject to existing national laws, licensing conditions and lawful regulations issued by local governments.
Local leaders have also been directed to discourage early-morning drinking and work with security agencies to ensure compliance.
Operators who repeatedly violate lawful restrictions could face enforcement action, including closure, according to the minister.
The directive also calls on local governments to regulate betting companies within their jurisdictions in line with applicable laws and regulations. The government says this is intended to protect communities, particularly young people, from harmful betting practices.
Officials have urged local authorities to take the lead in enforcing the measures while ensuring that all actions remain within the law.
