19 people have died from mpox in Kenya since the outbreak was confirmed three months ago according to the country’s Ministry of Health.
The ministry said Kenya has recorded 1,298 confirmed mpox cases with Mombasa reporting the number at 452. Nairobi follows with 320 confirmed cases.
Seven counties have been classified as high-risk areas because of their location along transport corridors and proximity to border crossings. They include Busia, Makueni, Kiambu, Kilifi and Nakuru while the outbreak has spread to than 40 counties.
Health authorities warned that mpox remains a health threat despite ongoing efforts to contain its spread.
The ministry called for surveillance continued public education and increased screening at county border crossings to help identify and contain new infections.
Kenya is also maintaining surveillance for infectious diseases, including Ebola. Although no confirmed Ebola cases have been recorded in the country authorities say measures are in place to respond to suspected infections and reduce the risk of the virus entering Kenya.
The ministry said it will continue strengthening surveillance, vaccination, public awareness and coordination, among health authorities as it works to contain mpox and prepare for emerging health threats.
