City enter the competition at the third-round stage because of their participation in the Champions League, while Norwich reached this stage after victories over MK Dons and Cardiff City.

Manchester City are defending the League Cup after beating Arsenal 2-0 in last season’s final at Wembley, with Nico O’Reilly scoring both goals. The club has won the competition nine times, with only Liverpool having lifted the trophy more often.

The match comes just days after City’s 1-0 victory over Manchester United in the Manchester derby. Erling Haaland scored the decisive goal in a match City played with 10 men for more than an hour following Phil Foden’s red card.

However, the derby victory was followed by controversy after refereeing body Pro Ref acknowledged that the VAR decision to award Haaland’s goal was incorrect. City manager Enzo Maresca said the decision should not overshadow his team’s performance.

Norwich arrive in Manchester after a dramatic 4-3 defeat against Middlesbrough in the Championship. The Canaries had previously defeated MK Dons and Cardiff City to reach the third round of the Carabao Cup.

The winner of Thursday’s tie will advance to the fourth round and host Brighton, who defeated Manchester United 3-2 in their third-round match. The fourth-round ties are scheduled for the week beginning October 26.

Kick-off at the Etihad Stadium is scheduled for 7:30pm UK time.
