seven Ethiopian armed groups have joined together to try to remove Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed’s government and set up a transitional administration.
The coalition is called the Alliance for Survival. It includes the Fano movement, the Oromo Liberation Army (OLA) and the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF).
The Alliance for Survival also brings together the Ogaden National Liberation Front, the Afar Revolutionary Democratic Unity Front, the Benishangul Peoples’ Liberation Movement and the Gumuz Peoples’ Democratic Movement.
In a statement the groups accused the government of causing conflict, mass destruction and worsening poverty. The groups said Ethiopia faced a risk of disintegration.
The federal authorities had not publicly responded to the announcement when this was reported.
This development comes while Ethiopia still faces conflict in Amhara and Oromia and tensions have risen again in Tigray.
The Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF) fought a two‑year war against forces from 2020 to 2022. An African Union‑backed peace agreement ended the conflict. Tensions between Tigrayan and federal authorities have persisted.
Fano forces once fought alongside the government during the Tigray war. They later turned against Addis Ababa after rejecting government demands to disarm.
The government has also fought the Oromo Liberation Army (OLA) in Oromia since 2018.
The Alliance for Survival brings together groups with political and regional interests. Earlier reports indicated that disagreements remained among some members, over Ethiopia’s future and territorial issues.
