Côte d’Ivoire’s Vice-President Tiémoko Meyliet Koné has said that the world’s peace architecture is slowly falling apart. He made the remarks during the session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York.
Koné pointed to increasing conflicts and insecurity in parts of Africa. He said the situations in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Sudan are especially troubling. “The world is looking on at the fragmentation of its peace architecture ” Koné said.
He also listed trafficking, violent extremism and transnational organised crime as major threats. These problems he said, are making things worse in the Sahel region.
According to Koné African countries are working hard to end running conflicts.. They are also paying high costs for counter-terrorism and peacekeeping missions. He expressed concern about what he sees as support from some international partners and the United Nations.
Still Koné praised the United Nations, the African Union, the Economic Community of West African States and security partners. He said their efforts to build peace are important.
He called on the community to give Africa permanent representation, on the UN Security Council. Koné also said the global financial system needs to change. He believes reforms are necessary to help developing countries effectively.
The 81st UN General Assembly began in September 2026. Its theme was “Restoring trust, managing transformation: a United Nations that delivers for all.”
