Zelensky Defends Ukraine Strikes After Trump Criticism

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has defended his country’s right to strike Russian oil facilities after US President Donald Trump condemned the attacks as a “disgrace”, escalating tensions between Washington and Kyiv over a diesel deal with Moscow.

Zelensky Stands Firm Against Trump

Speaking at an EU summit in Brussels, Zelensky said he was standing up for Ukraine’s interests and could not accept an agreement that might lead to further energy deals benefiting Russia. Trump accused the Ukrainian leader of being difficult to negotiate with and questioned his commitment to reaching a peace settlement.

US Diesel Deal Fuels Tensions

Trump has criticised Ukraine’s renewed attacks on Russian oil refineries because they could affect Moscow’s ability to supply 300,000 tonnes of diesel to the American and global markets. Zelensky has condemned the agreement, arguing that the revenue would help Russian President Vladimir Putin finance the war.

Europe Discusses Ukraine’s Funding Needs

At the Brussels summit, European leaders reaffirmed their support for Kyiv as Ukraine prepares for its fifth winter since Russia’s full-scale invasion in 2022. Zelensky told the European Council that the war would cost €155 billion next year, with at least €70 billion needed from the European Union for defence and weapons. He said Ukraine could produce up to three times more drones but lacked the funding to do so. Zelensky also highlighted a shortage of US-made Patriot missiles, which are essential for defending Ukrainian cities, and urged European allies to ensure sufficient air defence supplies for the winter.

Starlink Restrictions Add to Dispute

Relations have also deteriorated over restrictions affecting Starlink, the satellite internet network used by Ukraine’s military. Zelensky described the slowdown as a dangerous surprise and said speeds had not been fully restored. The Trump administration has also warned that intelligence-sharing with Kyiv could be affected if Ukrainian attacks on Russian oil facilities continue.

Attacks Continue on Both Sides

The diplomatic dispute comes as Russia and Ukraine continue striking each other’s energy and military infrastructure. Ukrainian officials reported deadly Russian drone attacks in Kharkiv, while Russian authorities said 644 Ukrainian drones had been intercepted across 26 regions. Satellite imagery analysed by BBC Verify also indicated that Russia was close to completing a drone base near the Millerovo airbase in the Rostov region. Separately, imagery from US intelligence firm Vantor showed damage at Borisoglebsk airbase in Voronezh, where several Su-34 fighter bombers had previously been visible on the tarmac.

Ukraine Seeks Continued Western Support

Despite the growing friction with Washington, Zelensky said many Americans still wanted to remain allies of Ukraine and Europe. His meetings with European leaders come as Kyiv seeks funding, weapons and air defence systems to withstand continued Russian attacks.
