Four Arrested After Nottingham Officer Shot
Four people have been arrested after a police officer was shot and seriously injured in Nottingham city centre, with detectives continuing investigations and warning that further arrests may follow. Nottinghamshire Police said the male officer remains in hospital in a stable condition following the shooting in Angel Row shortly before 04:50 BST on Sunday. The incident has prompted a major investigation and renewed attention to the risks officers face while responding to suspicious activity.
Officer Shot During Early Morning Encounter
According to Nottinghamshire Police, the officer approached two suspects at a bus stop in Angel Row shortly before the shooting. The circumstances surrounding the incident remain under investigation as detectives work to establish what happened before, during and after the firearm was discharged.
The officer sustained serious injuries and was taken to hospital for treatment. Police have confirmed that his condition is stable, while the Nottinghamshire Police and Crime Commissioner, Gary Godden, said the injuries were not life-threatening but could have life-altering consequences.
The shooting led to a large police cordon being established around Angel Row as officers secured the scene and gathered evidence. The cordon has since been lifted, although investigative work is continuing.
Four People Arrested
Three people were arrested after police stopped a vehicle in Nottingham’s Radford area on Sunday evening. They were identified as two women, aged 27 and 25, and a 24-year-old man.
The 27-year-old woman was arrested on suspicion of causing grievous bodily harm with intent and possessing a firearm with intent to endanger life. The 25-year-old woman and the 24-year-old man were arrested on suspicion of assisting an offender.
A fourth suspect, a 30-year-old man, was arrested in Bedfordshire during the early hours of Monday after police stopped a vehicle. He was arrested on suspicion of assisting an offender.
Police have not announced charges against the four suspects. Their arrests form part of the ongoing investigation, and the allegations against them have not been established in court.
Detectives Expect Further Arrests
Detective Chief Superintendent Richard Bull, who is leading the investigation, described the shooting as a horrific crime and said police were treating the incident extremely seriously.
He confirmed that officers expected to make further arrests in the coming days as detectives continued to examine the circumstances surrounding the shooting.
Bull also praised the injured officer, saying he had been carrying out his duties to protect the public when he sustained the serious injury. He acknowledged that the incident would understandably cause concern among residents but stressed that shootings of this nature were extremely rare.
The senior detective also pointed to a reduction in firearm incidents in Nottinghamshire. He said viable firearm discharges had fallen by more than 50 per cent compared with around five years earlier, adding that the force did not want to return to the levels recorded during that period.
Police Thank Public for Cooperation
Assistant Chief Constable Claire Rukas said experienced detectives were continuing to work to establish the full sequence of events. She welcomed the four arrests and said she hoped the development would provide some reassurance to the public while the suspects were questioned.
Rukas also thanked businesses, residents and members of the public for their patience and cooperation while the police cordon remained in place.
She confirmed that the injured officer was recovering in hospital and receiving support from colleagues and loved ones. The force has asked the public to respect his privacy during his recovery.
Police said their thoughts remained with the officer and his family, friends and colleagues, who have been affected by the incident.
Leaders Respond to the Shooting
Nottinghamshire Police and Crime Commissioner Gary Godden said the incident highlighted the dangers faced by police officers while carrying out routine duties. He noted that the officer had approached two individuals whose behaviour had appeared suspicious before the shooting occurred.
Labour MP for Nottingham East Nadia Whittome also responded to the incident, telling the BBC that she understood the officer had come out of surgery.
Whittome acknowledged that the shooting could damage Nottingham’s reputation because of its past association with crime. However, she also praised members of the public who had helped at the scene in the early hours of Sunday morning.
She said the incident demonstrated both the worst aspects of the city and the willingness of residents to support others in an emergency.
Investigation Continues
With four people arrested and further arrests anticipated, Nottinghamshire Police continue to investigate the shooting. Detectives are working to determine the roles of those involved and establish what led to the firearm being discharged.
Authorities have urged the public to remain patient as the investigation progresses. The injured officer remains under medical care, while police continue efforts to establish the facts surrounding the attack.
