MNEK Cancels Tour Over Costs and Low Sales

Grammy-nominated singer and songwriter MNEK has cancelled his upcoming UK and European tour, citing poor ticket sales, rising production costs and concerns that the show would not meet his expectations.

Artist Announces Tour Cancellation

The 31-year-old musician, whose real name is Uzoechi Emenike, was due to begin performing songs from his latest album, Bulldozer!!, next month. However, he announced the cancellation in a statement shared on social media, explaining that the production was not ready to the standard he wanted.

MNEK said he had been looking forward to performing the album live but was unwilling to proceed with a show that did not meet his expectations.

He thanked fans who had already purchased tickets and said refunds would be issued as soon as possible. The singer also expressed hope that he would eventually tour the album once he could deliver the experience his supporters deserved.

Rising Costs Force Difficult Decision

Explaining the circumstances behind the cancellation, MNEK said he was joining other musicians struggling with expensive productions, ambitious tour plans and the possibility of losing money through live performances.

He identified insufficient ticket sales and problems with the production budget as key factors in his decision.

The cancellation reflects wider challenges facing the live music industry, where artists are increasingly having to consider whether expected ticket revenue can cover the cost of staging performances across multiple cities.

Earlier this year, The Pussycat Dolls cancelled almost their entire planned US reunion tour following disappointing ticket sales, providing another example of the financial pressures facing live performers.

Musicians Struggle With Touring Expenses

The growing cost of touring has raised concerns across the music industry. David Rowntree, drummer for Blur and chair of the Featured Artists Coalition, previously warned that making touring financially sustainable had become extremely difficult.

Music booking agent and promoter Joe Booley told BBC Newsbeat that the industry had experienced considerable changes since the Covid-19 pandemic, particularly in how audiences spend their money.

He identified changing consumer spending as a contributing factor to weaker ticket purchases and tour cancellations, adding that poor sales were affecting many performers.

Booley said musicians were increasingly considering alternatives such as moving to smaller venues, reducing the number of tour dates or postponing performances rather than cancelling entire tours.

Fans and Fellow Artists Offer Support

Following MNEK’s announcement, several music stars expressed support for the singer in the comments.

Zara Larsson, whose album Midnight Sun was executive-produced by MNEK, was among those offering encouragement. Little Mix member Leigh-Anne Pinnock also sent him supportive messages.

Singer Becky Hill acknowledged the financial difficulties associated with live performances, writing: “Touring is devastatingly expensive but you’ll find a way”.

MNEK’s decision comes despite his established reputation as a songwriter and producer who has worked with major international artists, including Beyoncé, Madonna and Zara Larsson.

From Teenage Songwriter to Grammy Nominee

Born in south-east London, MNEK secured his first publishing deal at the age of 14, beginning a career that would see him write and produce music for several prominent performers.

His songwriting credits include work for British acts such as The Saturdays and Little Mix, as well as international stars including Kylie Minogue and Christina Aguilera.

He received his first Grammy nomination in 2014 for his collaboration with Duke Dumont and AME on Need U (100%). He was also nominated earlier this year for Best Dance Pop Recording for his work on Midnight Sun.

After years of contributing to other artists’ music, MNEK released his debut solo album, Language, in 2018. His second studio album, Bulldozer!!, arrived last month, eight years after his debut.

Despite cancelling the planned tour, the singer remains hopeful that he will perform the new material live when the financial and production circumstances allow him to deliver the show he envisions.
