“Based on the Medical Examiner’s determination and the findings of the investigation, Hayden Panettiere’s death has been ruled accidental,” the Greenville Police Department said in a statement.
The announcement brings the local police investigation to a close, although it remains unclear whether a separate investigation involving the US Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) has also concluded.
Cause of death confirmed
In September, the Greenville County Coroner’s Office confirmed that Panettiere died from the toxic effects of several substances, including fentanyl, 4-ANPP, alprazolam, methocarbamol and quetiapine.
Fentanyl is a powerful synthetic opioid, while alprazolam is commonly known by the brand name Xanax. Methocarbamol is a muscle relaxant, and quetiapine is a prescription medication used to treat certain mental health conditions.
The coroner’s office also reported that the autopsy found no signs of trauma that contributed to her death. Emergency responders had been called to the residence after a report that a woman was in cardiac arrest, but efforts to save her life were unsuccessful.
Authorities have not announced any criminal charges in connection with her death.
DEA involvement remains unclear
The circumstances surrounding Panettiere’s death had drawn attention from local and federal investigators, including the DEA, which was reportedly assisting with inquiries.
It remains uncertain whether the federal investigation has been concluded. The BBC contacted the agency for comment following the latest announcement.
The Greenville Police Department did not provide further details about the specific leads pursued during its investigation.
A police report from the day of her death stated that Panettiere’s former boyfriend, Brian Hickerson, and his brother, Zach, were present when emergency services arrived. Their presence was documented as part of the initial response, but the police announcement did not accuse either man of causing her death.
Remembering the actress
Panettiere began her career as a child and went on to become a familiar face in film and television. She gained widespread recognition for playing Claire Bennet in the science-fiction drama Heroes and later starred as country singer Juliette Barnes in the television series Nashville.
She also appeared in several films, including the Scream franchise, building a career that spanned decades.
Throughout her life, Panettiere spoke publicly about her struggles with substance abuse and other personal challenges. Her openness brought attention to the difficulties people can face while navigating addiction and recovery.
Her death has prompted renewed discussion about substance-related fatalities, particularly those involving fentanyl and combinations of prescription medications.
With Greenville police having formally closed their investigation, the focus now turns to whether federal authorities will provide further information about their involvement.
For Panettiere’s family, friends and fans, the announcement provides an official determination of the circumstances of her death while marking the end of the local police inquiry.
