Algeria’s former president Liamine Zeroual has been laid to rest with full military honors in his hometown of Batna.

The 84-year-old former general died on Saturday at a military hospital in Algiers after a long illness.

🇩🇿 Military and Political Career

Zeroual served as Algeria’s president from 1994 to 1999, a period marked by political transition and internal conflict. He had previously risen through the ranks of the National Liberation Army (Algeria), where he fought for the country’s independence from French colonial rule.

By 1988, he had become a general and was later appointed minister of defense before entering the presidency.

 Democratic Transition

He oversaw Algeria’s first pluralistic presidential election in 1995, winning with more than 60% of the vote, marking a significant moment in the country’s political history.

 Final Farewell

Current President Abdelmadjid Tebboune was among those who attended the funeral.

Algeria has declared three days of national mourning to honor Zeroual’s legacy.

 Legacy

After leaving office, Zeroual remained a respected public figure but declined multiple calls to return to politics, maintaining a reputation for restraint and independence.
