The Democratic Republic of Congo have secured their first World Cup qualification in 52 years after a dramatic 1-0 extra-time victory over Jamaica in the intercontinental play-off final in Mexico. Defender Axel Tuanzebe scored the decisive goal in the 100th minute, turning in a deflected corner to send the Leopards through.
The tightly contested match saw chances at both ends, with Cédric Bakambu having two goals ruled out for offside during normal time. Jamaica, led by Leon Bailey, failed to create clear opportunities to respond.
The win confirms DR Congo’s place at the 2026 tournament, marking their first appearance since 1974, when they competed as Zaire. The team will now face Portugal, Colombia and Uzbekistan in the group stage as they look to make history with a new generation of players.
