Body found in search for missing US soldiers during Morocco military drills

The body of one of two missing US soldiers has been recovered following a search operation in southern Morocco during the African Lion 2026 military exercises.

The soldiers disappeared last Saturday near a cliff along Morocco’s Atlantic coast while participating in the multinational training event.

Morocco’s army confirmed that one body was recovered from the sea on Saturday and transferred to a military hospital pending repatriation.

A US military official said the two soldiers may have accidentally fallen into the ocean, adding that terrorism is not suspected.

Search efforts remain ongoing for the second missing serviceman, with US, Moroccan and allied forces conducting large-scale land, air and sea operations.

The search has covered more than 8,000 square kilometres using aircraft, cave divers and underwater technology.

African Lion 2026 includes nearly 5,000 troops from over 40 countries and is one of Africa’s largest annual military exercises.
