A 16-year-old boy has been arrested on suspicion of murder following the fatal stabbing of another teenager near a park in east London.
Police said officers were called to the Mabley Green area near Homerton in Hackney shortly after 7pm on Monday after reports of a fight involving a group of young people.
When emergency services arrived at Poplar Close, they found a 15-year-old boy suffering from multiple stab wounds. Paramedics attempted to treat him at the scene, but he was later pronounced dead.
The victim has since been identified by the Metropolitan Police as Brayan Saldarriaga, aged 15, from Haringey in north London.
On Friday, police confirmed that a 16-year-old boy had been arrested on suspicion of murder. He remains in custody while being questioned by detectives.
Detective Chief Inspector Lucie Card, who is leading the investigation, said officers’ thoughts were with the victim’s family following what she described as a tragic incident.
She also appealed for witnesses to come forward, stressing that a large number of people were present during the incident.
Investigators believe several individuals may have recorded the confrontation on mobile phones and are urging anyone with footage or information to share it with police, saying it could be crucial to the investigation.
The killing has added to ongoing concerns about youth violence and knife crime in parts of London, with authorities continuing efforts to address rising incidents involving teenagers.
